Edinburgh needs a progressive Council that puts our Capital first

I had to do a double-take when I read my Evening News today (15/05/22). SNP Councillor Adam McVey claimed to have “a mandate to lead the city” despite his group having just 19 of Edinburgh’s 63 Councillors and his party’s share of first preference votes fell to 25.9%.

This kind of outlook perhaps explains why the Greens, Labour, Lib-Dems and Tories all appear less than keen to work with Edinburgh’s nationalist Councillors.

In the article he rightly mentions the “cost of living crisis” as being one of the biggest challenges facing people in Edinburgh today, but he failed to mention his party’s role in making it worse. From driving up rents by allowing short term lets to run riot in Edinburgh for a decade to increasing our water bills to help fund Scottish Water’s boss taking a bonus of £227,000, the SNP have much to answer for.

Indeed, the SNP’s failure to stand up for ordinary people in Edinburgh is a key part of why Labour can’t support them in running our city. We will, however, work with progressive people in every party who put our city first to help tackle the combined challenges of the cost of living crisis, the climate emergency and the Covid recovery.

    Aye very true and by the way His gaffer Nicola isn’t exactly doing a great job with the health service , the police force or education all three trashed . And before anybody blames “the bad boys “ at Westminster for no enough dosh we have to remind ourselves it’s Nicola who controls the tax we pay in Scotland . It’s sad for Edinburgh it’s sad for Scotland and it’s sad for every Scottish woman man and child .

    Edinburgh Labour are not acting in the interests of the people of Edinburgh. The coalition of the last 5 years clearly had public support, as the election proved. There was an opportunity after the election to have continued on with the coalition, in what would’ve been a majority administration, but thanks to Anas Sarwar that won’t be happening. Instead, Edinburgh Labour would rather see a minority SNP-Green administration or some three-way deal between themselves, the Lib Dems and the Greens, which would probably be a disaster.

    Also, when are people getting the over £1000 of support Labour’s election leaflets promised? Is anybody getting that anywhere in Scotland?

      Finlay, I think you are incorrect about the role of Anas Sarwar – we are a democratic party, and our leader can’t impose his will on us!

        He absolutely can and he has done. Remember what happened to the Aberdeen nine?

        Cammy Day wanted a continuation of the coalition, but Anas put a stop to it.

    not sure if this is a Council thing or perhaps more Scottish Goverment but as everyone had a 150 pound cost of living award to their council tax bill if in bands A-D but if you move house you don’t get in new property as not lived there since Feb 2022 and new buyer to my property wont get either so what happends to the excess money?and the 150 awarded I will no longer get it all only from April to when i move seems unfair
