Below is an update from the City of Edinburgh Council on works planned on the West Approach Road.

I would like to inform you of important upcoming works on the West Approach Road, which is a continuation of the closures through May and July. It will necessitate a series of phased closures throughout September. These closures are essential to facilitate critical repairs, maintenance remedials and strengthening works on the bridges along the route. This work is vital to ensure the long-term safety and durability of the infrastructure.

The closures will take place as follows:

1.           Eastbound Closure:
From Monday, 2nd September 2024 to Friday, 13th September 2024. During this period, the eastbound lane of the West Approach Road will be closed to traffic. Westbound lane will remain open.

2.           Westbound Closure:
From Saturday, 14th September 2024 to Saturday, 21st September 2024. Following the completion of eastbound repairs, the westbound lane will be closed while eastbound lane remains operational.

3.           Full Closure:
From Monday, 23rd September 2024 to Saturday, 28th September 2024. To complete the final stage of these essential works, the entire West Approach Road will be closed to all traffic. Additionally, we will have nightshift lane closures during this period on Dalry Road below as we carry out essential strengthening of Dalry Road Bridge.

4. Off Dundee Street Bridge Closure.
From Monday, 2^nd September 2024 to Monday, 30^th September 2024.Within this period, we will be carrying out essential work to the bridge.

During previous phases of works, additional necessary strengthening was discovered, and some of the original scope had to be postponed. These latest closures are to continue this work, which consists of further steelwork strengthening, new waterproofing, grit blasting and painting, graffiti removal, rebuilding displaced masonry and new expansion joints.

We will also explore the possibility of resurfacing the carriageway along the West Approach Road, subject to the contractor’s ability to coordinate this with the ongoing infrastructure works. Whilst we are keen to take advantage of this opportunity and appreciate its importance, this may not be feasible within the current project timelines.

These are expected to be the final closures for now, however we are awaiting an additional weekend possession of the railway at Russell Road – likely next year – and this will likely include a corresponding restriction on the West Approach Road for that weekend.
