After-School Care in Edinburgh South West – We Need to Talk

After-school provision is more than just childcare, it’s a lifeline for working families and a key part of helping children thrive, especially those with additional needs.

Since smilechildcare stopped offering after-school services in May, many schools have been left scrambling. Some now have no provision at all, and parents are rightly concerned.

Constituents have reached out to me about the availability and quality of after-school care in Edinburgh South West. One major issue was the sudden cancellation of the Spring Oscars breakfast club at Pentland Primary earlier this year. Partly due to input from my team, that service was reinstated – but the wider problem remains.

In August, I launched a community survey to hear directly from families in Edinburgh South West about their experiences with after-school care. The responses are eye-opening and highlight the urgent need for action.
